The ragged pieces of ideas and thoughts of my attempt to live a life as a contemporary monastic in the urban city of Singapore..
I read from John Maxwell's book 25 Ways To Win With People and I found this chinese proverb which says
If you want happiness for an hour - take a nap
If you want happiness for a day - go fishing
If you want happiness for a month - get married
If you want happiness for a year - inherit a fortune
If you want happiness for a lifetime -
help others.Last week Mag smsed me this message:
"Hi, just went to the dentist. He extracted my wisdom tooth finally. Now I feel a bit bodoh". Bodoh is Malay for stupid.
Helping others? Yes I thought its now a good chance to exercise help. ... But I learned very fast that
"helping others" is an act of humility rather than pride. I'll spare you the details, but it is always good ending when we gain a lesson.
This morning I reflected on everything I'm doing again. I look at my life purpose. I check on my debt of love. I stocktake my everyday living (and dying). I asked the Lord for why does the road towards good always hard. The Lord gave me an impression. If we want to reach the peak of a mountain, the direction is always upward. If life's too easy, it's probably because we ain't doing much.
To aim for the mountain top, we walk, we run, we rest, we work and we enjoy the journey. By God's mercy our effort brings us a bit higher everyday. We have to remember while we may progress in work and effort but we only shine by helping others along the way.
